overview

Cenderawasih Bay, located in West Papua, is Indonesia’s largest marine national park and one of the most biologically diverse regions in the world. Its calm, protected waters cover more than 1.5 million hectares, including coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds, and deep ocean basins. This vast ecosystem supports an incredible range of marine life, making it one of Indonesia’s most important conservation areas.

The bay is most famous for its whale sharks, which are often seen around fishing platforms where they gather to feed. Beyond its marine wonders, Cenderawasih also holds cultural and historical significance, with local Papuan villages along the coast and several WWII shipwrecks lying just beneath its waters. This rare combination of biodiversity, culture, and history makes it a unique stop for yacht expeditions.

experiences await

Swimming with Whale Sharks

Cenderawasih Bay is one of the few places in the world where whale sharks can be reliably seen year-round. These gentle giants often gather around floating fishing platforms, where they feed on small fish released by local fishermen. Swimming alongside them offers one of the most unforgettable wildlife experiences in Indonesia.

What makes these encounters special is their accessibility. Whale sharks here are accustomed to the presence of humans, allowing for long, calm interactions. For yacht guests, this creates the opportunity for extended and intimate encounters with the largest fish in the sea, an experience rarely found elsewhere.

Diving and Snorkeling

Beyond whale sharks, the bay’s coral reefs are incredibly rich, with more than 500 species of coral and over 1,000 species of fish recorded. Divers can explore walls, bommies, and soft coral gardens, encountering reef sharks, rays, and turtles along the way. The bay is also home to several intact WWII shipwrecks, making it a fascinating site for wreck diving.

For snorkelers, shallow reefs close to shore offer just as much excitement, with vibrant coral gardens and schools of fish visible in crystal-clear water. Because of the bay’s vast size and relative isolation, sites are uncrowded, allowing for peaceful exploration both above and below the surface.

Exploring Remote Villages

The coastline of Cenderawasih Bay is dotted with Papuan villages, where traditional ways of life remain strong. Visiting these communities provides a chance to learn about local fishing practices, handicrafts, and daily routines that are deeply connected to the sea.

These encounters add a cultural layer to the journey, complementing the marine focus of the bay. For yacht guests, it’s an opportunity to connect with local people, understand their traditions, and experience a slower pace of life that has changed little over generations.

islands to explore

Biak

Biak is the largest island in Cenderawasih Bay and often serves as the main entry point for travelers. It combines natural attractions with cultural and historical sites, including WWII relics that reflect the island’s strategic importance during the war. Biak’s markets and villages also offer insight into Papuan culture and everyday life.

Offshore, the reefs around Biak provide excellent diving and snorkeling opportunities, with clear waters and abundant marine life. Anchoring nearby allows yachts to balance practical logistics with cultural exploration and underwater adventure.

Numfor

Numfor Island is known for its serene beaches and vibrant birdlife. Its inland forests are home to parrots, cockatoos, and other tropical species, making it a rewarding stop for birdwatchers as well as marine enthusiasts. The island also features small villages where visitors are welcomed warmly.

The surrounding waters are calm and ideal for snorkeling and kayaking. With its mix of wildlife and cultural life, Numfor offers a quieter, more intimate side of Cenderawasih Bay that contrasts with the larger islands.

Mapia Atoll

Mapia Atoll is a remote cluster of islets and lagoons that showcases the untouched beauty of the bay. Its shallow lagoons are filled with reef fish and corals, while the outer reefs drop into deep blue water that attracts larger pelagic species.

Because it is so isolated, Mapia feels like a private paradise. Few visitors ever make it this far, which means that a yacht anchorage here provides a truly exclusive experience of Cenderawasih’s unspoiled nature.
